4 Questions You Should Be Asking Yourself If You Want To Grow As A Leader-4.001

  1. What are you responsible for?

  2. What is your plan for accomplishing your responsibilities this week?

  3. Who are you accountable to?

Here’s the last of 4 questions growing leaders ask:

4. WHO IS INVESTING IN MY LIFE?

As a spiritual leader, you no doubt are investing in others.  Chances are you enjoy investing in the lives of those you serve.  Chances are also good that those you serve probably really enjoy the work you are doing.  The people you invest in probably tell you that they are growing and becoming more effective in their life and faith as a result.  But many leaders I know neglect receiving that kind of investment for themselves.

The truth is I resisted asking people to invest in my life for a while.  There were many reasons I gave for my resistance.  I didn’t have enough money to hire a coach, or enough time, or enough questions, or enough trouble.  But the thing that kept me from seriously pursuing a coach was really only this: I didn’t have enough humility.  I thought I could lead and overcome the obstacles I was facing in ministry on my own.  The reality was that I couldn’t.  None of us can lead well without a skilled coach’s investment in our lives.

Here’s why it’s great to have a coach who will invest in you:  A Coach will Bring Out The Best In you

Tiger Woods, Michael Phelps, and Michael Jordan are all household names.  They certainly had natural athletic ability, but we know them because they had coaches who brought out the best in them.  As a result, they entertained us with their honed athletic talent.

The same is true for leaders.  All leaders have some natural skill as well as supernatural gifting.  If you want to make a real difference as a leader, you can’t just show up expecting that people will follow you.  If you are going to be effective as a leader, you need someone to bring out God’s best in you.  If not, you will be prone to settle for something far less, and that will have consequences on you as well as on those you are called to lead.

Scripture is full of examples of people who invested in leaders in order to bring out the best in those leaders.  Moses had Jethro.  Elisha had Elijah.  Timothy had Paul.  The disciples had Jesus.  The results of this investment in the leader’s life was lasting, and their leadership impacted generations that followed them as a result.  The investment was nothing short of remarkable.  Therefore, the most important question you can ask yourself as a leader is this: Who do I have investing in my life?

Here’s How You Can Find A Coach To Invest In Your Life: Sign up for Awaken’s Coaching.

If you want to grow as a leader, you need to have someone in your life whose sole purpose is to invest in you.  You need someone who will create a sacred space for you to regularly enter that is devoid of their own personal agenda, judgment, and critique in order to bring out God’s best in you.

The danger of leading without a coach is burnout.  Spiritual leadership is tough.  Without someone consistently investing in you, you will no doubt become overwhelmed, drained, and discouraged as a leader.  When we invest in others without having someone invest in us, our souls dry out and become hard like a sponge that has been squeezed out and put on the counter.

Coaching plunges us back into the refreshing waters of the Spirit.  It softens our souls and fills us with the Spirit’s energy.  It’s then we come alive again to God as we lead, and those we lead come alive to God as well.
